対面する龍の形をした鍔

ティムール朝時代(1370–1507年頃)に作られた翡翠の工芸品のなかには、柄が龍の頭の形をしているものがいくつかありますが、この作品の原型となったのはティムール朝の金属細工でした。神話に表れる野獣の様式化された獰猛さが、この時代の人々が好んだ翡翠の暗緑色で強調されています。翡翠は、龍とともに守護の力があると信じられたため特に貴重とされました。固いことで有名な翡翠は彫ることが非常に困難なため、この精巧な作品を彫った職人の並外れた技術のほどが伺えます。刃が現存しないためこの剣がどの程実戦に使われたか知ることはできませんが、ティムール時代には地域抗争が絶えなかったため、戦場に持ち込まれたことはまず間違いありません。
