クロースによる美術作家ルーカス・サマラスの巨大な肖像画は、拡大するために格子状に分割したポラロイド写真を基にしています。クロースは1960年代に、アクリル絵具で細密に描かれたフォトリアリズムによる巨大な肖像画の制作を始めました。対象を画面いっぱいにアップで描くという構図はそのままながら、コラージュや指紋といった意外な手法を用いて本物らしさを追求しました。サマラスの顔は、間近で見ると、それぞれが固有の色とりどりの模様が描かれた何千もの小さな正方形に分解されてしまいますが、離れて見ると無数の抽象形態が一体となり、吸い寄せられそうなモデルの激しさを捉えた、強烈なインパクトのイメージが現われてきます。
