透かし彫りのスフィンクス

この象牙板は、新アッシリア時代のシリアの帝国前哨地アスラン・タシにあった建物から出土したと考えられています。横たわる有翼スフィンクス(ここではカツラと幅広の襟をつけ、前足をハスの花の上に置いています)はエジプ トの図様ですが、表情のタイプはシリア様式です。シリア様式の大きな調度品では通常、人物を横向きに描き、対称的に配置します。これはこの背中合わせに配されたふたつのスフィンクスでも同様で、それぞれが異なる場面の一部を成しています。間にあったと思われる木のレリーフと対の飾り板は現存していません。
