安格尔是他这一代人中最伟大的新古典主义艺术家。他对古典主题有独一无二的诠释，往往将考古学上的精准与仔细拿捏的感人戏剧场面相结合。此图上，诗人维吉尔正给罗马皇帝奥古斯都、他的妻子莉薇娅和他的姐姐屋大维娅阅读《埃涅阿斯纪》。当诗人朗读到“你将成为马塞卢斯”（拉丁文：Tu Marcellus eris）时，屋大维娅昏倒在皇帝腿上。马塞卢斯是她死去的儿子，他的裸身塑像主导着这个夜间场景，在墙上投下幽灵般的阴影。米奥利斯将军（1759 –1828年）于1811年委托安格尔作的一幅油画与这幅素描有关，他曾在意大利为拿破仑一世服务。
