Tal como seus compatriotas, Benjamin West e John Singleton Copley, Trumbull aspirava se destacar na pintura histórica no “grande estilo” e criar obras de temas colossais e heroico. Seguindo os conselhos de West, escolheu um episódio importante no longo cerco de Gibraltar; a tentativa dos espanhóis em tomar a fortaleza defendida pelos britânicos. Em um ato de compaixão, o general George Eliott oferece ajuda a seu inimigo mortalmente ferido, o jovem don José de Barboza. Embora o artista tenha retratado uma vitória britânica concreta, seu propósito era representar a conduta nobre dos cavaleiros em todas as circunstâncias.
