トランブルは、同国人のベンジャミン・ウエストとジョン・シングルトン・コプリー同様、大規模で壮大な、勇ましい歴史画を描いて成功したいという望みを抱いていました。ウエストの勧めで、トランブルはこの作品でスペイン軍がイギリス軍から「ジブラルタルの岩」を奪取しようとした、ジブラルタル長期包囲戦の重要な場面を描きました。将軍ジョージ・エリオットが死に瀕する若い敵将ドン・ホセ・デ・バルボーザに慈悲の手を差し伸べるという、イギリス軍の勝利における特定の場面です。しかしながらトランブルの目的は、あくまでも状況に捉われることのない紳士の高貴な振る舞いを表すことでした。
