영국의 주도적 사실주의 화가인 프로이드는 모델의 신체를 꾸밈없이 묘사하면서 인간성을 드러내는 구도를 창출하였습니다. 이 회화의 모델은 런던을 거점으로 활동하던 호주인 행위예술가 레이 보워리로서 프로이드가 좋아하던 모델 중 한 명이었습니다. 보워리는 기발한 의상과 화장으로 알려졌지만 프로이드는 그의 화실에서 폭넓고 낮은 의자에 쪼그리고 앉아 있는 육중한 보워리의 나상을 묘사하였습니다. 물감을 두껍게 칠해 묘사한 살집이 좋고 거대한 그의 등은 마치 조각된 것 같습니다. 이 작품은 전통적인 초상화는 아니지만 피부의 정물화라고 할 수 있습니다.
