イギリス写実主義の権威のひとりであるフロイドは、モデルの体をあからさまに描写しながら、その人間性をあらわにする構図をしばしば取り入れました。この作品のモデルだったリー・ボウリーはロンドンを拠点に活動したオーストラリア人のパフォーマンス・アーティストで、フロイドのお気に入りのモデルのひとりでした。奇抜な衣装と化粧で知られていたボウリーでしたが、フロイドは彼のアトリエで低く幅広の腰掛けに裸で重々しく座っている彼の姿を描いています。絵具を厚く塗って描いたボウリーの肉付きのよい大きな背中は、あたかも彫刻されたかのようです。この作品は伝統的な肖像画ではなく、肌の静物画と言えるでしょう。
