사비니 여인들의 납치

전설에 의하면 초기 로마인들이 젊은 여자들을 강제로 아내로 삼기 위해 이웃 사비니 여인들을 로마에 초청했다고 합니다. 여기서 로물루스는 전사들에게 여자들을 체포하라는 미리 정해진 신호로서 자신의 망토를 올립니다. 푸생의 고대 연구는 오른쪽에 있는 남자가 입고 있는 황색 갑옷을 통해 증명되는데 이 갑옷은 가죽으로 만들어졌으며 토르소를 복제한 것으로 로마의 로리카를 모방한 것입니다. 오랫동안 프랑스 고전 회화를 정의하는 명작으로 여겨졌던 이 작품은 로마의 프랑스 대사 크레키 후작의 소유물이었습니다. 크레키는 그 도시에서 성인 시절을 보냈던 푸생을 만날 기회가 있었을 것입니다.
