サビニの女たちの略奪

伝説によると、古代初期のローマ人は若い女性を略奪して娶るために、近隣のサビニの村人を祭りに招いたとされています。この作品に描かれているのは、ロームルスが外套を持ち上げて、兵士たちに女性を捕らえる合図を送っているところです。右手の男性が着けている黄色い鎧から、プッサンが古典から学んだことが分かります。鎧は男性の胴の形をかたどって皮革で作られたローマ時代のロリカを手本にしています。長らくフランス古典主義絵画を定義する最高傑作とされてきたこの作品は、ローマ駐在フランス大使のクレキ元帥が所有し、彼は成人期をローマで過ごしたプッサンに会う機会があったと思われ ます。
