휘슬러는 1879년부터 1880년까지 베니스를 방문하던 중 런던 파인 아트 협회의 의뢰를 받아 12점의 연작 중 하나인 이 판화를 제작하였습니다. 그는 신중하게 선을 에칭한 후 드라이포인트로 강조했으며, 2색 인쇄를 하였습니다. 흑색 잉크는 리오 데 라 파바라는 운하에 접한 구소니 궁전의 호화롭게 장식된 출입구를 묘사하기 위해 사용되었습니다. 갈색 잉크는 선이 거의 없는 부분에 모노타이프 방식으로 표현되어 전경의 덧없는 물의 흐름과 계단 뒤 어스름한 공방 내 분위기 있는 빛의 반사를 묘사합니다.
