この作品は、マサチューセッツ州ロックポートのにぎやかな街を舞台に描かれていますが、あふれる色、線、形、装飾的な要素によって主題はほぼかき消されています。キャンバ スにはガソリンスタンドのポンプ、樹木、店舗の看板だけでなく、同地域で盛んな水産業を象徴する水、船の旗、ロープ、セーヌ社製の魚網などで埋め尽くされています。デービスは自分で新しく打ち出した「色と空間」の理論を活用し、特定の色を並べることで奥行きの錯覚を生み出し、同時に形状と色視野の徹底した平面性によってそれを否定しています。デービスは、絵画におけるこのような矛盾は20世紀半ばの現代アメリカ社会の活力、断絶、そしてスピードを捉えていると考えました。
