ブリュッセル出身のスウェールツは、1646年と、1653年から54年にかけて、ローマで活動しました。ブリュッセルに戻って数年後アムステルダムに移り、1661年にはそこに住んでいたことがわかっています。オランダでは彼の宗教上の自制と慈善活動が人々の関心を集め、この非常に個人的な作品はそこで描かれたと考えられています。1662年にフランス人宣教師とペルシアへ旅し、1664年に一人旅で訪れたインドのゴアで亡くなりました。スウェールツの質素な生活は、洗練された色彩、光、そして表現の妨げとなることはありませんでした。
