Originario de Bruselas, Sweerts trabajó en Roma entre 1646 y 1654. Tras regresar a Bruselas, se mudó a Ámsterdam, teniéndose noticia de su presencia en esa ciudad en 1661. Probablemente pintó este cuadro muy personal en Holanda, donde sus actos de abnegación y caridad eran notorios. En 1662 viajó con misioneros franceses a Persia, y luego continuó solo hasta Goa, India, donde murió en 1664. La austeridad de Sweerts en su vida privada nunca afectó el extraordinario refinamiento de su paleta, ni su tratamiento de la luz y la expresión.
