Box with tulip motif in book form
Solid wood box with sliding lid, all carved in low relief - some in chip carving fashion - with similar tulip motifs on both covers. Only the fixed front cover received the added date of 1750, reserved inside a recessed field below the tulip. All recessed surfaces are covered in stippled punchwork. The spine is divided into five fields with alternatingly raided cross motifs. The book edges are left relatively plain, with the concave surfaces only receiving a cross motif in stippled form. On the fore edge, the suggestion of two clasps were left standing against the concave recesses. Business card inside from Suchow and Seigel.. -- description by Mindell Dubansky in consultation with Lynn Heckman.
