万福玛丽亚

高更从波利尼西亚人的宗教信仰中受到启发，画了一系列作品。但在那以前，他将第一幅有关大溪地人的主要作品献给了一个基督教题材。他在1892年 3 月的一封信中如此描绘这件作品：“一个长着黄色翅膀的天使将玛丽亚和耶稣（两人都是波利尼西亚人）启示给两位波利尼西亚妇女看，这两位妇女赤裸上身，穿着彩色长裙，这是一种上面印有花朵的棉布，可以从腰间垂下来。背景阴沉多山，另有开花的树。”这件作品的标题引用了天使加百列在“天使报喜”时对童女玛丽亚说的第一句话；“Ia orana（万福）”是大溪地的标准问候语。
