维纳斯的梳妆室

路易十五的情妇蓬帕杜夫人非常欣赏布歇，她从1747年直到1764年去世都是布歇的赞助人。这幅著名的画和另一幅一起，都是她请布歇为贝尔维尤城堡的化妆室画的；那是她位于巴黎附近的城堡。1750年，她在一出戏剧中表演过题目中的角色，这出戏在凡尔赛上演，就叫做“维纳斯的梳妆室”。虽然这幅画不是肖像画，但艺术家也很可能借此机会将蓬帕杜夫人美化了一番。
