Flintlock Longrifle

Gunsmith Peter White American
dated 1794
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 372
On loan to The Met
This work of art is currently on loan to the museum.
White worked in three different locations during his career, evolving his style with each move. He is best known for his mature work in Bedford County, Pennsylvania that influenced many gunsmiths in that region. This rifle’s style and date suggest he made it in Emmitsburg, Maryland, probably as an apprentice, before his move to Bedford County shortly after 1800.
