피카소는 파리의 보헤미안 생활을 묘사하는 이 대표적 작품에서 그가 젊었을 때 존경했던 앙리 드 툴루즈 로트레크가 제작하였으며 어디에서나 볼 수 있었던 포스터의 요소를 차용하였습니다. 이 회화는 몽마르트 카바레의 장식용으로 그 카바레를 묘사한 것이며, 1905년부터 1912년까지 파리의 공공장소에서 계속 전시되었던 피카소의 유일한 작품입니다. 피카소는 평생 동안 할리퀸을 자신의 또 다른 자아로 묘사하였는데 이 회화에서 최초로 자신을 할리퀸으로 묘사한 것으로 추정합니다. 그의 옆에 있는 자는 저메인(로르 가갤로)이고 이 두 사람 뒤로 보이는 인물은 라팽 아질의 주인인 프레드 제라드입니다.
