매체에 상관없이 가장 뛰어난 풍경 작가 중의 한 사람인 칼턴 왓킨스는 오리건 주 포틀랜드의 컬럼비아 강에서 100마일 정도 상류에 위치한 혼 영역의 하늘, 강, 철도, 절벽이 있는 경이로운 풍경을 거대한 판유리 음화로 촬영하였습니다. 셀릴로는 오리건 증기선 항해회사가 의뢰한 4개월간의 조사에서 가장 멀리 떨어진 곳에 있었습니다. 자연과 인간의 개발 사이의 교묘한 균형을 보여주는 이 사진은 미국인이 이 대륙을 지배할 운명을 지녔다는 신념을 암시하는 시각적인 은유로 해석될 수 있습니다.
