이 사진에서 스타이컨이 사용한 색은 휘슬러의 녹턴 연작을 연상하게 하며 전경의 나뭇가지는 19세기 말부터 20세기 초까지 파리에서 유행했던 일본 목판화의 구도를 따르고 있지만 주제는 현대 미국의 고유한 광경입니다. 뉴욕 시의 메디슨 스퀘어에 당시 완공된 22층의 이 고층 건물은 너무 높아서 이 사진에 전체 모습을 담을 수 없었습니다. 메트로폴리탄 박물관의 사진 컬렉션에서 주옥같은 스타이컨의 플랫아이언 빌딩 3연작을 빼놓을 수 없습니다. 황혼의 변하는 시간에 따라 다른 색조로 인화된 이 연작은 사진이 스케일, 색상, 개성, 표현력에서 회화에 필적할 수 있다는 것을 강력하게 주장하고 있습니다.
