Kylix fragment
On loan to The Met
This work of art is currently on loan to the museum.It is exceptionally unfortunate that this beautiful cup is so incomplete. The tondo depicts a finely dressed woman spinning thread as her hydria fills with water. On the exterior, young people converse at a fountain house, indicated by the columns and the lion's head spout at the far right. Fetching water was not a menial task. The subject, with figures shown in fancy dress, was favored for vases used in symposia (drinking parties).
