クーロス
ノグチは第二次世界大戦中の日系アメリカ人強制収容所への抑留後、1940年代半ばに接着剤やピニオン軸を使わずに組み合わされた、有機的な造形の石の彫刻を制作しました。いくつものピンクと灰色の大理石から構成されたこの見事な作品には、優美でありながらバランスの曖昧さが感じられます。ノグチはこの作品の原点となった古代ギリシャの彫刻と比較して、当館に宛てて次のように書いています。「クーロスとしての男性像のイメージは、学生時代の思い出にさかのぼります...メトロポリタン美術館が取得したピンクのクーロス(前章に掲載)...石はそれ自体の重量で空間に保たれます。それはまるで人生そのもののような、正確でおぼつかない力のバランスです。」
