対面する動物柄の絨毯

高度な幾何学的デザインのこの羊毛絨毯は、ヨーロッパで好まれた初期の織物の伝統を示すものです。このことは、類似の絨毯が14–15世紀の教会に見られ、当時の絵画に描かれていることから分かります。同じ図案の絨毯が15 世紀前半のシエナの絵画に見られることから、この絨毯の製作時期を特定できます。これほど早い時期の絨毯で完全な形で現存するものはわずかしかなく、この作品はその3 枚のうちの1枚です。対面する動物の中にさらに小さい動物が描かれている図案は、おそらく同時期の織物に由来するものと思われます。これより後の16世紀のトルコ絨毯は草花のモチーフと、独特の様式化された星や円形模様を取り入れています。
