Seated Nude

Georg Kolbe German

Not on view

Georg Kolbe, who was born in the town of Waldheim, Germany, initially trained as a painter and draftsman before turning to sculpture in 1900 while staying in Rome. Although less known than his sculptural practice, the artist’s drawings offer insight into his approach to the human form. Seated Nude exemplifies his expressive handling of brush, ink, and wash to explore the human figure in two dimensions, a technique complemented by later chalk and charcoal drawings by the artist housed in The Met collection.
