Saint Michael and the Dragon

Spanish (Valencian) Painter(?) Spanish

Not on view

A graceful Saint Michael is poised to deal a fatal blow to his monstrous opponent. Originally part of a larger ensemble, this painting was made in Italy by an artist inspired by the richness and refinement of Valencian art. It attests to the mobility of the International Gothic style. The painter may have been associated with Gherardo Starnina (ca. 1360–1413), an important Florentine artist who worked extensively in Valencia. Despite these close ties to Spanish art, the poplar panel and other aspects of the materials and technique point to an Italian origin, including the exquisite punchwork, or tooling, in the gold ground.
