Tall Clock

1740–50
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
The dial on this clock exemplifies the type of dial William Claggett made in his mature period. It is characterized by a large painted series of the moon's phases with a narrow name plate above it, which conforms to the arch. On this clock, the subsidiary dials are an unusual feature. The housing for the dial is stylistically the most advanced of the case housings for his works. The broken scroll pediment over and arched cornice is known on no other Claggett clock case.
