Miniature Tall Clock

1755–65
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
There are only ten known clock movements signed by Thomas Claggett. Of these only the dials on this clock and one now at Winterthur are alike, both featuring the type of spandrels common on late seventeenth-century English clocks. The cases of the two clocks are smaller than standard size, but larger than most miniature versions, and each has a separate bonnet with a hinged glazed door, typical of full-size tall clocks. This case matches the archetypal housing for Claggett's earlier clocks.
