Plate, part of a collection of 30 pochoir pattern plates, originally part of a book titled "Les fleurs et leurs applications décoratives" (Flowers and their decorative applications), created by Émile-Allain Séguy and published in Paris by A. Calavas, as part of the collection "Librairie des Arts Decoratifs" (Library of Decorative Arts) in 1902. The plate features five ornamental designs inspired on the natural beauty of umbels, providing what Séguy considered a successful example of the application of scientific study of flowers in artistic creation, resulting in colorful designs likely intended for textiles or wallpapers. The first design is made up of thin, interlacing branches, colored with brown, with bundles of semi-abstract umbels, colored with purple, and stylized leaves, colored with gold and framed by pastel purple squares, on a striped background executed with two shades of green. The second design is made up of thin branches, executed with reddish-brown, with offsetting thin, interlacing branches with semi-abstract leaves, also executed with reddish-brown, the spaces between the branches colored with green, and with bundles of semi-abstract umbels colored with pastel blue and green, over an orange ground. The third design consists of alternating heart motifs, made up of thin branches with stylized leaves, colored with dark blue, and bundles of semi-abstract umbels, colored with dark blue and pastel green, over a green ground. The fourth design is made up of thin, interlacing branches with stylized leaves, colored with dark blue, the spaces between the leaves colored with blue, and small bundles of semi-abstract umbels, colored with white, over a light green ground. The fifth design is made up of interlacing undulating branches with leaves, colored with dark blue and outlined with brown, and undulating branches, colored with white, with small bundles of semi-abstract umbels, colored with cream, over a red ground.
