The etching is based on a drawing attributed to Pirro Ligorio, sold at Sotheby's London (19 February 1987, lot 237). Ligorio was in Rome in the 1550s at the same time as Passerotti was active in the city. Like most of Passerotti's etchings this print reproduces its model in reverse orientation
