Woman's theatrical costume with a lean, beige dress and black accessories
Drawing, design for a woman's costume, part of a group of 88 costume designs by Vincente Minnelli. The costume consists of a tailored dress of light beige fabric, with ample shoulders and lean, slightly flared, mid-calf skirt, and a beige belt emphasizing the waist. A black scarf covers the neck, and long gloves, ample around the elbows, cover the hands. A tilted, black hat, and pointed-toe, black shoes complete the outfit.
According to an additional sheet of notes typed by Vincente Minnelli (included with matted drawing), the costume is: "#4 [underlined]/ (6) [In graphite]/ Tailored dress of light weight beige/ wool broadcloth. Surplice bodice cut/ in one with sleeves. Skirt fitted/ snugly below hips; flaring out at/ a point about midway between hip bones/ and knees. Fullness in front to have/ tailored effect. Gloves of black stiff velveteen to above elbow where they/ become exaggerated to pointed gauntlets/ and are buttoned onto sleeve. Scarf of/ black velveteen draped around neck./ Large black velveteen swagger hat."
