Box

Probably Elias Pelletreau American
1753–76
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
The attribution of this box to Pelletreau has been questioned because the letters in the mark are wider than in any other recorded Pelletreau mark. Judge Clearwater recorded in 1933 that he had bought this box from an aged widow named Brundage who said it had descended to her from an ancestor who was its maker.
