This box originally belonged to Lucy Mercy Noyes of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The box then passed through two generations of Noyes's named Lucy Mercy. A descendant of the third Lucy Mercy Noyes sold the box to Judge Clearwater, the donor, at a salvage sale held for the benefit of the Red Cross during the First World War.
