The Parthenon

1880
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
This is believed to be a study for an unexecuted mural for one of the lunettes in Wing A of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, which opened to the public at the end of March of 1880. As late as February 16 of that year, the Board of Trustees discussed a proposal for such a mural. The committee that investigated the time necessary to complete the lunette ultimately abandoned any thought of attempting elaborate decorations before the opening. This mural study, probably executed while the committee was as yet undecided, was donated by the artist to the Museum at the request of one of the members of the executive committee, William Loring Andrews.
