View on the Seine: Harp of the Winds
After his return from France in 1886, Martin continued to paint landscapes of Normandy for a number of years. This is the best known of these canvases. Martin sketched the composition in charcoal at his New York studio in 1893 and finished the oil in the fall of 1895. The picture depicts a view down the River Seine toward the town of Criqueboeuf. The picture was first exhibited at the Union League Club in New York in 1896, where it received flattering notices. It remained unsold for a year until, at the suggestion of the artist's wife, a group of the artist's friends purchased it for the Museum.
