Behind Dunes, Lake Ontario

1883–87
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
This picture shows a view to the northeast of Oswego, New York, on the lake between Point Ontario and Sandy Pond. Martin visited the site in December of 1874 and painted five views of this subject between that year and 1887. He also painted a sixth view of the site in 1896, the year before his death. This version was begun in Paris in 1883 and was intended for exhibition at the Paris Salon of 1884 but was never shown there. He continued to rework the canvas until 1887.
