This work of art is currently on loan to the museum.Li Jian drew most of his calligraphic models from the “Stele School” (Beixue), which sought inspiration from early monuments of carved stone or cast bronze with inscriptions often written by unknown artists. He recognized the importance, however, of the “Model Letters School” (Tiexue), which focused on brush-written calligraphy by celebrated artists. Of these works, none was more famous or essential than the Preface to the Orchid Pavilion by Wang Xizhi, who was known as the “calligraphy sage.” The upper fan here is a copy of the opening section.
