Self-portrait with Yellow Couch

1905

Margarethe Geibel was an artist active in Weimar during the first half of the twentieth century who worked primarily in woodcut. The first decades of the twentieth century witnessed a great interest in the technique of woodcut among artists and collectors and, Japanese woodcuts in particular were influential in Germany and elsewhere in Europe.

Although she studied with several artists of the day, she apparently taught herself to make woodcuts that sometimes employed interlocking blocks and were often inked in different colors. Her prints are often unevenly printed and produce a rough, hand-made effect. However, she was not unknown and was recognized in art publications of the time, like the issue of Graphische Künste, 1910, which praised her best known series, a beautiful portfolio of color woodcuts depicting the interior of Goethe's house in Weimar.
