The Monuments of Paris

after Régine Carey German, born Nuremberg
after Hubert Robert French
ca. 1806
Not on view
This drawing is related to both a painting by Hubert Robert (1733-1808) from 1789 and to a drawing and print by Régine Carey (ca. 1760-1821) from around 1806. The scene is a capriccio envisioning great monuments of Paris in an imaginary setting. While the composition, scale, and size very closely match Carey’s drawing (80.3.569), ultimately this work appears to be by a different artist. In this drawing, the artist adds more shadow and contrast using the dark wash. Perfectly straight lines, like those on the pedestal beneath the sculpture of a lion or along the cornice of the building in the background, suggest that the artist may have used a straightedge to carefully copy Carey’s print.
