Portrait of the Maharaja of Jaipur, Sawai Man Singh II
This is a youthful portrait Sawai Man Singh II (r. 1922–1947), the last ruling Maharaja of the princely state of Jaipur. He is dressed a full length pink jama with gold thread design, trim, and fasteners, and matching turban. Multi-strand pearl necklaces are worn tight to his neck, along with long garlands of fresh jasmine. The adopted son of Maharaja Madho Singh, he ascended the throne at the age of ten as Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II and head of the Kachwaha clan of Rajputs. This photographic portrait likely records that event.
