SALUD! (a salute to the Chinese artists and their new revolutionary nation)
After the 1949 revolution in China—which led to the creation of the People’s Republic—Mexican printmakers traveled there and established bonds with fellow artists. This poster symbolizes this friendship through their shared practice of printmaking. Behind a hand holding an engraving tool, which dominates the composition, a Mexican man and a Chinese man (who strongly resembles Chairman Mao) shake hands. The print was published by the Taller de Gráfica Popular. Making clear the connection between printmaking and its service to society, another example of this print is inscribed "To the artists of the new China. Faithful interpreters of your people."
