Los Hambreadores (The Greedy Ones)

The exploitation of those who worked the land was often addressed by Mexican printmakers during the first half of the twentieth century. Fluctuating and inflated prices in particular were a concern. Here, a group of figures with grotesque faces oppress Indigenous farmers. The man at right points to a sign that reads "Corn $10 a kilo," revealing the profits that this greedy collective amassed by inflating the price of corn, a staple of the Mexican diet.
