Throughout his career, Ocampo was concerned with themes relating to struggle and social justice. He was also a keen observer of urban life, which is exemplified through this series of prints, created in 1941 (but not published until seven years later). They broadly address poverty by showing beggars on the street, scavenging, and sleeping rough. Their bold style, with sharply contrasting forms and areas of shadow, recalls the work of German Expressionist artists such as Max Beckmann who also employed figurative realism to voice social criticism.
