Dish in the Shape of a Paulownia Crest with Plum Blossoms

mid-17th century
Not on view
This small dish is an early example of Japanese porcelain produced in Arita, Hizen province, where several kilns were established. Its intricate shape allows for the pairing of plum blossoms, rendered in red and green against a blue geometric backdrop, with three overlapping paulownia leaves, in white. The complex composition would have required a precise handling of various techniques, including the creation of refined molds.
