The Right Hon-ble. Charles Earl Cornwallis, from the "London Magazine"
This vignette bust-length profile portrait, facing right, shows Cornwallis wearing an ermine edged cloak over a jacket and white-collared shirt, as well as a short wig. The ermine points to the sitter's nobility. In June 1781, Cornwallis was in America, fighting as a British general in the American Revolutionary War. Five months after this print appeared he would surrender his army at Yorktown to a combined American-French force, bringing hostilities effectively to an end.
