Invitation to a Celebration of the Completion of the Erie Canal, November 4, 1825
Issued by the Corporation of the City of New York, this invitation asks the recipient, Mr. A. Leonard, to a ceremony that celebrated the opening of the Erie Canal. On November 4, 1825 at 8 oclock a.m., attendees met at City Hall then journeyed by steam boat to Sandy Hook where a ceremonial pouring of Lake Erie water into the Atlantic took place. In the preceding ten days, a flotilla had moved from Buffalo to Albany along the canal, then moved down the Hudson to New York City. A parade and a banquet concluded the celebrations.
