Engraver Charles Grignion, I British
After William Hogarth British
1761
Not on view
Frontispiece to the catalogue of the pictures exhibited by the Society of Artists, at their first exhibition in Spring Gardens. Britannia stands in a rocky landscape, leaning on her spear as she waters three trees labeled "Painting", "Sculpture" and "Architecture." Behind her at right is a portrait bust of George III in a niche surmounted by a crown. This adorns a fountain which spouts water from a lion head to replenish Britannia's watering can. The bust is identified with lettered text: "Georgius III Rex. MDCCLXI." This second version of the print was re-engraved by Grignion and published in 1761.
