Original brown leather binding with gold stamped spine and red leather label lettered: "America De M. Pople;" the crest stamped in gold on the front and back identifies the early owner as Anne Robert Jacques Turgot (Comptroller-General of Finance to Louis XVI and minister of the navy in 1774-76 who opposed French financial support for the American Revolution).
