Shiva and Parvati (Har Sadhna)

mid-20th century
Not on view
Shiva is seen here holding a conch while Parvati, gazing at a garlanded lingam, offers milk to Vasuki—the King of Snakes, who often accompanies Shiva, typically entwined around his neck. The scene is placed within a decorative cartouche. The radically bright colors and three-dimensional modeling show the trend towards realism typical of the artist B.G. Sharma. He was raised in Nathdwara’s icon-painting community and briefly attended art school in Bombay before reaching success as a calendar artist and printer. After the founding of his Sharma Picture Publications in 1955, S.S. Brijbasi lost their dominance in the competitive market of calendar art.
