The Scottish artist is portrayed here seated on a chair with his hands in his lap. The print was part of a series issued as supplements to the "Illustrated News of the World." Soon afterward, the London Joint Stock Newspaper Company published the series as a book titled "The Drawing-Room Portrait Gallery of Eminent Personages, With Memoirs by the Most Able Authors" (1859).
